What is an Industrial Pump?

An industrial pump is a heavy-duty pump designed to move liquids over a distance at a required flow rate and pressure. Unlike standard pumps, industrial pumps are built to operate in harsh conditions and handle a wide range of fluids, including water, oil, petroleum, chemicals, slurries, sludges, wastewater, and food and beverage products.


Main Types of Industrial Pumps

Centrifugal Pumps - Centrifugal pumps use rotational force to move fluid. Liquid enters through the suction nozzle into the eye of a rotating impeller. The impeller vanes generate velocity, moving the fluid outward and through the discharge side of the pump.

Centrifugal pumps are commonly used in process, chemical, and mining industries, as well as water supply, fire protection, and sewage systems. They are also central to cooling tower circuits, where maintaining efficient water flow is critical. Marley Flow Control has extensive experience designing, installing, and repairing centrifugal pump systems in this context.


Positive Displacement Pumps - A positive displacement pump moves fluid by trapping a fixed volume and forcing it into a discharge pipe. Some designs use expanding and contracting cavities on the suction and discharge sides to draw fluid in and push it out.

These pumps are suited to applications requiring a consistent, controlled flow, particularly with high-viscosity fluids such as oils or paints. They deliver a steady output regardless of system pressure.


Common Causes of Industrial Pump Breakdowns

Cavitation - Cavitation occurs when pressure at the suction end of a pump drops below the vapour pressure of the fluid. The liquid begins to vaporise, forming air bubbles that collapse violently as they move toward the higher-pressure discharge side. The resulting shockwaves cause vibration and mechanical damage, progressively reducing pump efficiency and, if left unaddressed, leading to failure.

The best prevention is to specify a pump correctly for its application from the outset. Where cavitation is already present, there are often steps that can reduce it without requiring full pump replacement.


Vibration - Excess vibration accelerates wear across bearings, seals, and other components. Vibration can stem from system design issues, but shaft misalignment is one of the most common causes. Laser alignment carried out by a qualified technician resolves misalignment issues and can significantly extend pump service life.


Wear - Industrial pumps operate under demanding conditions and are subject to both mechanical wear and chemical degradation from corrosion. Fouling, where particles accumulate on internal surfaces, adds to this wear over time.

A consistent planned maintenance schedule is the most effective way to manage wear and catch problems before they become failures.
