Defence Force Engineering Services: Challenges and Capabilities

Engineering support for defence force operations demands a level of flexibility, expertise, and reliability that few industrial service providers can meet. Military bases run complex systems, operate under strict regulatory requirements, and cannot afford service interruptions.

Fuel Systems Maintenance

Fuel is central to military logistics and operational capability. Fuel systems used by the Australian Defence Force are significantly more complex than those used in most industries. The ADF operates with more than eight different fuel types, including specialised military-specification fuels that contain additives required for reliable operation across harsh and demanding environments.

Military fuel must be stored in conditions that support use across a wide range of climates, often for long-term periods, and with additional requirements in combat situations. All servicing and maintenance of ADF fuel systems must be carried out in accordance with the strict requirements set by the Department of Defence Standards.

Fuel Tank Services Fuel tanks require regular cleaning, inspection, and maintenance to remain fit for purpose. Three-yearly tank inspections are a standard requirement. Tanks also need to be installed, replaced, and decommissioned in an environmentally safe manner.

Underground tank inspections and integrity testing are mandatory and must be performed by technicians qualified to work in confined spaces and remote locations.

Fuel Pump Services Given the range of fuel types in use, pump maintenance is a regular and critical task. This includes installation of new pumps and servicing of existing fuel, fire water, trade waste, and sewage pumps.

Emergency Fuel Supply Reliable emergency fuel supply infrastructure is essential for sustained military operations. Key services include diesel fuel testing, transfer pump hire and support, and on-base vehicle refuelling. Emergency generators, oil-fired boilers, and fire pumps for emergency use also require supply, installation, and ongoing servicing.

Compressed Air Services

Compressed air systems are widely used across defence operations, from providing clean airflow to powering fuel injection systems and maintenance equipment.

The ADF primarily uses two types of air compressors: rotary screw compressors, suited to continuous long-term operation, and reciprocating compressors, used for intermittent tasks. Both types require regular planned maintenance. Standby compressors must also be available for temporary installations or to cover breakdowns.

Environmental Services

Under the Defence Environmental Strategy released in October 2016, the ADF is required to manage military base operations in an environmentally responsible manner, with a specific focus on minimising future pollution risks and managing existing contamination.

Engineering services required to meet these obligations include regular groundwater sampling and reporting, inspection and cleaning of oily water separators, and test leak well monitoring.
