Fuel Tank Repairs

Location: Sydney, Australia
Job Type: Large Diesel Fuel Tank Repair
Client: Undisclosed
Contractor: Marley Flow Control

The Problem

A 13,000,000-litre riveted diesel fuel tank had undergone floor repairs in the 1980s, including the installation of a non-compliant fibreglass overlay. Over time, this overlay prevented accurate scanning and thickness testing of the original steel floor, rendering the tank's inspection records non-compliant with API standards. The client required a full remediation to restore inspection capability and bring the asset back into regulatory compliance.

Our Approach

Marley Flow Control executed a structured, compliance-driven repair strategy across three phases.

Fibreglass Floor Removal

Grit blasting was used to strip the non-compliant fibreglass overlay and expose the original steel plate beneath, providing clear access for inspection and testing.

Inspection and Testing

With the floor exposed, a comprehensive inspection programme was carried out including radar scanning to detect imperfections in the steel, material sampling to verify original construction materials, vacuum testing to identify any potential leak points, and compilation of a full compliance dossier to support regulatory documentation requirements.

Restoration and Quality Assurance

Following successful testing, the tank floor was repainted and subject to painting quality assurance checks prior to recommissioning, ensuring the asset was returned to service in a fully compliant and documented condition.

The Result

This project demonstrates Marley Flow Control's capability to remediate complex legacy fuel storage infrastructure with precision, technical rigour and a compliance-first approach.

  • Restored API compliance

  • Improved inspection access for future surveys

  • Tank returned to service following full QA verification

  • Enhanced structural integrity and complete documentation record
